Graduate in Architecture in Spain, Belén Moneo obtained a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Harvard University in 1988 and her Masters in Architecture in 1991 from Columbia University GSAPP.
She has been a practicing architect since 1993, when, together with Jeff Brock, she founded Moneo Brock Studio (MBS) in New York City.
The firm’s work can be characterized by the intensity of design focus it provides, whether it be architecture, interior or industrial design. In 2002 MBS opened an office in Madrid where they have recently completed the MUSEUM FUNDACION TELEFONICA. Other notable projects include a GLASS PAVILION AND PARK in Cuenca, the THERMAL BATHS in Panticosa and a GAS STATION in San Agustín de Guadalix.
Furthermore, Moneo and Brock have lectured extensively on their work from Europe to the USA to China, Turkey, Guatemala, Panama and Peru, and their work has been widely published in magazines including Domus, Tectonica, Casabella, Interior Design, Abitare, Wallpaper, Frame, Diseño Interior, On Design, AIT and in books by Taschen, Loft Publications, Rockport Press, Ryland Peters and Small and Abrams, among others.
They have shown their work in exhibitions such as Una Ciudad Llamada España, (Moscow, Athens, Istambul, 2011) or Innovación Abierta, (Panama City, 2011), and have received awards for the Northwest Corner Building and the Thermal Spa.
In parallel to her own practice, Belén Moneo has worked as project architect with Rafael Moneo on projects such as the MUSEUMS OF MODERN ART AND ARCHITECTURE, Stockholm, Sweden, the CRANBROOK ACADEMY OF ART STUDIO BUILDING, Bloomfield Hills, or the RESIDENCE OF THE SPANISH EMBASSY, Washington DC.
In 2010, MBS completed the NORTHWEST CORNER BUILDING at Columbia University, where they collaborated as design architects with Rafael Moneo.
Belén has always combined her role as an architect and as a designer. From the beginning of her career, as she set up her own studio, she undertook research work formally applied to everyday objects and always from all possible approaches: geometry, material, light, transparency, color … and also approaches of her own architectural education, as the structure, installation, implementation and even transport logistics. That is why she has always been actively involved in production processes.
Result of this philosophy are products such as Pakaging for Joselito Limited Edition 2010, (a cocoon of wood and fabric, with LED inside, it can be a display stand in a store, a trolley or a floor lamp at home), CHROMODULAR, 2000 (a transparent acrylic colored shelf , composed of pieces that occupy minimal space on your storage and transport phase, which requires no mechanical fasteners in assembly and allowing multiple settings), sink “MESETAS” (2001) (translation to the kitchen counter of derived from knowledge of landscaping).
. His work ranges from prototypes to an exhibition of contemporary design furniture STANDART (2003) or GLASSE KITCHEN design (2003) for BD, to industrial development FRONTALIS line (2003-2005) for Roca in collaboration with Rafael Moneo.
Her recent design projects include a pendant lamp developed with the company B. Lux for a hotel in Barcelona.
